4 Tips for Virtually Onboarding New Hires

tips for onboarding new hires

Virtually onboarding new hires can be quite challenging if not done properly. Technical issues can arise that can reduce employee engagement and make them slow to learn their new job responsibilities. The last thing you want is for a new hire to feel isolated. Here are 4 tips for making your virtual onboarding successful.

1. Determine the necessary technology

Before onboarding a new hire, identify the necessary technology they will need to onboard successfully. Determine how and when it will be delivered to the new hire. Include easy to follow directions for setting up the equipment and, if possible, provide a technical support phone number they can call if they have problems.

2. Create a plan

Design a training and orientation plan. The training plan should include your normal onboarding checklist of activities such as completing new hire paperwork, setting up the new hire in your systems, and benefit enrollment. Provide training materials or links to tutorial videos on how to use the various software applications. Assign on-the-job training with key employees through virtual meetings and platforms.

3. Make time for virtual introductions

Introduce the new hire to other team members through virtual meetings. One of the disadvantages of virtual onboarding is the lack of interaction with coworkers. Therefore, include in the training and orientation meeting times to virtually meet with team members for both training and bonding purposes.

4. Communication is key

Set clear expectations, work schedules, and goals for your new hire. Schedule regular check-ins with them to review the training and orientation plan and to monitor their progress. Giving feedback frequently will help a new employee understand clearly your expectations and allow them the opportunity to make adjustments. Lastly, make sure to give the new hire a list of people they can turn to for support if they have questions or need assistance.

Companies are having to adjust to remote work environments so why not ensure the success of your remote hires by designing or refining your virtual onboarding procedures. We hope these tips can help you and your team enhance your onboarding process.
