What Is Sourcing?
Sourcing is the process of identifying qualified candidates and it is the most critical part of the recruiting process. Since the best candidates don’t always apply to job postings, finding them can be difficult. Sourcing requires the right technology and can be time-consuming, but it is one of the most valuable ways to locate top talent.
Why is Sourcing Important?
Companies are finding that job boards are not enough in a competitive market. Oftentimes, they do not receive enough qualified job candidates to make a good selection. With sourcing, you are able to reach a larger pool of quality job candidates.
Another reason is that the perfect job candidate is most likely already employed, but that doesn’t mean they will not jump ship for a better opportunity. With sourcing, you are able to engage with and attract job candidates that may not be searching for a new opportunity. Sourcing also allows you to build a pipeline for the future because candidates that may not be interested now, may be interested in the future. They may also be able to provide a referral.
How Do You Source Job Candidates?
The purpose of sourcing is to create interest in an open position to convince qualified candidates to apply. Sourcing requires specific techniques that are effective in searching, analyzing the job requirements, and understanding the labor market. Here are the steps to sourcing job candidates.
Understand the job requirements. You begin with a detailed review of the job requirements and responsibilities. Talk to your managers to ensure you have a good understanding.
Assess the market for salary information. You need to know what the market is paying for the position and make sure your salary information is specific to your company size, geographical location, and job functions. Knowing the right salary is vital in attracting qualified candidates.
Develop an Ideal Candidate Profile. Your Ideal Candidate Profile helps you target the right job candidate. Include specific work history, character traits, and skills required for a candidate to be successful at your company.
Source your candidate database and current pipeline. If you don’t have a pipeline, you can conduct searches on social media platforms. Many companies invest in recruiting software that provides a platform for finding, connecting with, and managing candidates. But beware, these platforms can be costly, especially if you are not hiring for multiple positions throughout the year.
Advertise open positions on your social media platforms. Engage with your followers, give information about the open position(s), and provide a link to apply.
Develop a recruiting pitch. Your recruiting pitch is how you communicate your company’s special attributes and offerings to a potential job candidate.
Create a shortlist of qualified candidates. At this point, you have a pool of quality candidates that can move on to the next phase of the interview/hiring process.
Companies need to have a robust sourcing and recruiting strategy in order to thrive in today’s hiring environment. It is important to be proactive, not reactive, in overcoming the challenges of modern-day recruiting.
