The spotlight that has long been on Millennials is now shifting to a new group entering the workforce, Generation Z (Gen Z). According to a recent study by Dell Technologies, Gen Z is quite different from their Millennial predecessors and they demand much more from their employers. Hiring managers and HR professionals will need to look closely at this highly skilled and tech-savvy generation to discover the best ways to attract and retain them. Here is what you need to know about who they are, what they want from their employers, and what they can bring to your company.
Cutting-Edge Technology is a Must
Gen Z is coming into the job market as tech-natives. Technology is an integral part of their daily lives. They have seen the rise of tech giants like Google and social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Snapchat, and are more likely to look to Google for information than ask a peer. They see technology as a tool to help them achieve their goals and they expect to use it in the workplace. 91% of them say that the technology offered by an employer would be a deciding factor in choosing between similar job opportunities and 80% want to work with cutting-edge technology.
When attracting this group, the technology offered in the workplace must be emphasized. A company’s online presence also matters. Make sure the company website is optimized for mobile and that your company is active on a variety of social media platforms. Take a look at the technology used in your employee life cycle. Is your online application easy to use? What about your onboarding process and the technology used on the job? Frequent software glitches or a bad user interface can be a big turnoff to Gen Z workers.
They Prefer In-Person Communication
Gen Z wants to feel like they are part of a team. They value the opportunity to learn from their co-workers. 75% expect to learn on the job from co-workers or other people – not online. Though they are an independent group, 58% prefer to work as part of a team vs. independently. Companies that provide mentorship or peer-coaching programs will be able to provide employees with valuable opportunities to learn from one another. 77% of Gen Zers are willing to be technology mentors which can be of tremendous benefit to your entire workforce. Providing opportunities for them to share their tech skills is also a great way to attract and retain them.
Flexibility is Expected
Given their daily use of technology, Gen Z workers expect flexible work environments. Many prefer in-person collaboration, but if that is not an option, a Zoom meeting or conference call will work. They value work-life balance and want work options that fit their lifestyles. They prefer to have the option to work from home, in a co-working space, or at a coffee shop.
Given the recent pandemic, many companies have adjusted and currently provide flexible work arrangements. If your company is looking to bring employees back into the workplace post-pandemic, consider holding on to some remote work options. It can be a great tool to attract Gen Z employees.
Authenticity, Diversity and Equity Matters
Gen Z employees are looking for much more than money. They view the companies that they work for as an extension of themselves and they want to be proud of their company’s culture and values. Remember, this group grew up under major social and political milestones like the first black president of the United States and movements such as #metoo and Black Lives Matter. They value authenticity, diversity, and ethical business practices. 70% of Gen Zers say that a company’s level of diversity would affect their decision to work there. It’s important for companies to promote their culture and values and be transparent in the steps they are taking to ensure pay equity, diversity, and inclusivity. These measures resonate highly with Gen Z and can be a factor in their decision to work for your company.
